Monroe football new No. 1
The Monroe Catholic Rams have looked down right unstoppable in three games this season and the poll voters are taking notice. Monroe is now the number one ranked team in Division II-III for football.
Lathrop, last week’s number one team, moves down to third with a loss to East Anchorage while North Pole is tied for fifth with Eagle River after their game last weekend was canceled due to Covid-19.
Schedule changes
What would the 2021 fall sports season be without some schedule changes, right?
The biggest change can be read about in today’s paper as West Valley’s game against Chugiak this week has been canceled due to insufficient roster numbers on the Wolfpack’s roster. That game will not be made up.
Only two Fairbanks area schools will be playing football this week as Eielson travels to Valdez Saturday and Monroe hosts Redington. The other schedule change involves the Rams as their game has been moved from Saturday afternoon to Friday at 6 p.m.
Ice Dogs to hold one more scrimmage
If you weren’t able to make it to the Ice Dogs’ first two scrimmages of training camp, you’ll still get one more opportunity to do so before they leave town for a while.
Thursday night will be the third and final intrasquad scrimmage of training camp for Fairbanks. The scrimmage is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. Attendance is encouraged and admission is free.
The Dogs will play two preseason matches Saturday and Sunday against the Anchorage Wolverines at 5 p.m. Those games can be watched live at Alaska-Live-Events.ticketleap.com. The Dogs will open the regular season Sept. 10 in Minnesota against the Magicians.
UAA hockey to return in ‘22
The outrage was swift and far-reaching when the University of Alaska Anchorage announced they’d be disbanding their hockey program due to Covid-19. The school later announced they were implementing a $3 million fundraising goal that needed to be reached by Aug. 30 in order to return hockey to UAA.
Mission accomplished
The University of Alaska Anchorage announced Tuesday that they reached their goal for fundraising and were planning to restart the program in 2022. UAF, on the other hand, will begin their first hockey season in two years Sept. 25 against Simon Fraser University.
Special Olympic Winter Games postponed
The Special Olympic Winter World Games previously scheduled for this January have been postponed due to Covid-19. The games will still take place in Kazan, Russia, but will now be held in January 2023.
The news is a blow to all who were ready to participate, including Team Alaska. The Fairbanks area was slated to have at least one competitor as Teagan Lockwood was set to participate in the downhill skiing event. Lockwood was the 2021 Female Athlete of the Year for Special Olympics Alaska.
