FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North will be holding an Art and Science Workshop for teens over spring break.

According to Gail Priday, School and Community liaison for the University of Alaska Museum of the North, this workshop picks a new focus of study every year, with this year being the aurora.

“In this workshop, we combine a little bit of science and a little bit of art, and actually also some traditional stories just to give a bigger picture of the aurora.” Priday elaborated. “We actually pick different topics. We’ve done paleo art, optical arts, we’ve done cyanotypes, we’ve done a lot of different things over the years - and aurora just seemed like a fun thing to do right now. There’s lots of interesting science. Also, there’s a lot of potential for colorful and creative art projects, and there’s also a lot of traditional stories about aurora and it all fits together.”

Along with education, another goal of this event is to broaden the horizons of students in attendance by potentially getting them interested in different subjects.

“For one,” Priday explained, “it might attract students with different interests. So for example, if you really like art, you might say, ‘Oh, I want to come to the art side,’ and then learn something about the science that really inspires you - and the other way around, you might be into science and then discover that arts are pretty fun too. Really, [it’s] just this idea that when you broaden your horizons and stretch yourself a bit, you learn more and you become better at whatever you do.”

According to Priday, the museum will have plenty of activities planned for those students who attend. “We’re gonna check out some things in the gallery. We’re going to be able to see some aurora, listen to aurora, see artists’ interpretations, and then there’s going to be a science demo and we’re going to do an art project that uses really basic materials a lot of people might have at home, but we’re going to show kind of a fun spin on it to do something really different and exciting.”

The workshop will be taking place on March 14th, but the museum asks that registration be completed by the 10th. More information can be found on their website.
