While this is his last season of hockey at the junior level, Weyburn’s Braden Birnie is off to the next level. It was announced this morning he has committed to playing at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks next season.

The UA-Fairbanks Nanooks play NCAA Division 1 hockey as an independent.

Birnie is currently playing with the Steinbach Pistons of the MJHL. He was acquired by the Manitoba club at the CJHL trade deadline from the Weyburn Red Wings, where he was the captain of the team. In 24 games with Steinbach, Birnie has 31 points, including 10 goals.
