Reader letter: Proposed federal legislation Bill C-10 should be scrapped

Article content

I feel Canadians should be very concerned about proposed legislation by the federal government. Bill C-10, also known as the Broadcasting Act reform bill, was tabled last year by Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault to “make web giants pay.”

In my opinion, it is a Trojan horse that threatens freedom of speech and expression in Canada.

Said Peter Menzies, a former member of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission: “Granting a government agency authority over legal user-generated content … doesn’t just infringe on free expression, it constitutes a full-blown assault upon it and, through it, the foundations of democracy.”

Professor Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law at the University of Ottawa, said: “Freedom of expression and due process is out, quick takedowns without independent review and increased liability are in.”

I believe at best this is overreach, at worst this is a deliberate violation of our Charter rights. In my view, this bill should not be passed and must be scrapped.

If you are as concerned as I am, please write to your local MP to express that concern.
