FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team played their first game of the season in an exhibition against the Simon Fraser Red Leafs at the Carlson Center. Alaska cruised to a 6-0 victory, Saturday.

“It was nice to be back in front of the home fans again,” said Erik Largen. “We possessed the puck really well, and we got a chance to get a good look at a lot of the guys.

Arvils Bergmanis scored the first goal of the game on the Nanooks first powerplay of the season. Later in the first, Jonny Sorenson stole the puck along the half wall and Karl Falk pushed the lead to two. Matt Radomsky got the start in net for the Nooks and played one period, making two total saves.

Daniel Allin would replace Radomsky in net after intermission, and Allin saved all five shots he faced. The second period was the lowest-scoring for the Nanooks. A.J. Macaulay capitalized on the powerplay again.

In the third, Jonny Sorenson would tally his second point of the night, scoring four minutes into the final period. Brayden Nicholetts and Xavier Jean-Louis also scored making it a six goal Nanooks lead. The third goaltender on roster saw the most action, saving seven shots.

“Overall, I think we took a step forward,” commented Largen. “Now the real season begins Saturday.”

Alaska out shot the Red Leafs 48-14 in the exhibition victory. Now, the Nanooks face their first, real test of the 2022-23 season, this Saturday hosting American International College (AIC).
