UAA’s Nash wins GNAC cross country title

University of Alaska Anchorage sophomore Cole Nash won the men’s race at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon.

Nash completed the 8K course in a time of 23 minutes, 46 seconds, winning comfortably by finishing 17 seconds ahead of his closest competition.

UAA teammate Michael Zapherson finished sixth to join Nash on the All-GNAC team.

Other Seawolves finishers included Jesus Avalos (13th place in 24:45), Drew Johnson (24th in 25:16) and Ries Tveit (47th in 26:31). UAA placed third out of 10 teams with 83 points.

Alfin Nyamasyo (20th place) was the top UAA finisher in the women’s 6K race in a time of 22:25.

Teammate Elle Stevens finished in 32nd place in 22:42, followed by Jordan Strausbaugh (33rd in 22:49), Tessa Wood (37th 22:50) and Sofija Spaic (44th 23:33).

The UAA women finished seventh out of 10 teams with 163 points.

“We achieved our realistic best case scenario — everything we could today,” said associate head coach Chas Davis in a release from the school.

Nash was also named the GNAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year on Saturday.

The Seawolves will compete at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Billings, Montana, on Nov. 19.
