Cattlemen I and II

Project Overview

Cattlemen Solar Park is a 240-megawatt (MW) solar project currently under construction. Cattlemen I will be located in the northeast corner of Milam County, Texas, approximately 70 miles northeast of Austin. Cattlemen II Solar Park is a 150 MW solar project also under construction, which will be located approximately one-half mile from the original Cattlemen I Solar Park site. The project areas would be located west of Baileyville, along FM 2027, and consist primarily of pastureland. The projects will be sited entirely on private land that would be leased from landowners who recognize the benefits of hosting a solar project. Lease payments would serve as a stable, weather-resistant cash crop that complements the area’s agricultural economy. Cattlemen Solar is anticipated to be brought online at the end of 2023 and Cattlemen Solar II is anticipated to be brought online in 2024.

Energy Output

Cattlemen Solar Park and Cattlemen II Solar Park would have installed capacities of 240 megawatts (MW) and 150 megawatts (MW). Cattlemen I and Cattlemen II Solar Park's generation would be equivalent to the consumption of more than 37,000 and 23,000 Texas homes.

Benefits

Community

Cattlemen Solar Park and Cattlemen II Solar Park would yield significant economic benefits to the community in the form of payments to landowners, local spending, and annual community investment.

Cattlemen I and Cattlemen II would represent capital investments of approximately $280 million and $220 million. These investments would disperse millions in cumulative payments to local governments through the life of the projects. An estimated $55 million and $41 million in taxes would be paid to support local schools and community services. Hundreds of construction jobs would be created as well as multiple permanent jobs.

Environment

Cattlemen and Cattlemen II would save more than 304 million and 190 million gallons of water each year and prevent the air pollution that causes smog, acid rain, and climate change. Solar energy also enhances air quality by helping to mitigate the health effects of harmful air pollutants.

Landowners

Cattlemen Solar Park would provide a stable form of income to local landowners. Millions of dollars would be paid to the Cattlemen I and II landowners through the life of the projects.

Solar Panels

Cattlemen Solar Park and Cattlemen II Solar Park are currently exploring using single-axis tracking PV panels. The approximately size of Cattlemen I Solar Park is 2,600 acres. Photovoltaic solar cells have no moving parts and convert sunlight directly into electricity via the photoelectric effect. This direct-current electricity is then collected, transformed into alternating-current, and finally enters the electrical grid through a substation after being converted to the proper voltage.
