Electric Aircraft Chargers, Charging Facilities, and Vertiports for eVTOL and Electric Aircraft: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts

With airlines looking to reduce their largest operating expenditure, fuel, while providing safe and efficient flights that reduce CO2 emissions, electric aircraft (EA) are being designed and tested around the world. Before these EA can take their place in the aviation market, chargers and charging facilities must be strategically placed to ensure proper battery charge levels are achieved before the next flight. With very few of these aircraft in operation and thousands expected to be in service in the next 15 years, the EA charging network needs to grow faster than EA fleets.

Aircraft manufactures are building EA and the required chargers for their aircraft, and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has joined forces to standardize those chargers. As in the automobile industry, significant expenditure needs to be made to develop charging networks for these EA. Before an EV was able to travel long distances on a cross-country trip, a charging infrastructure had to be in place to support that road trip. This need is also the case with EA: until the battery technology evolves to a point that allows aircraft to cover distances nonstop, a network of charging stations is required.
