Adoption of EVs into Fleets from Pilot to Full Fleet Migration: Analysis and Forecasts

Although there is heightened buzz around EVs for personal use, many organizations plan to use EVs for their operations. These organizations will likely replace existing fleets over time with functionally equivalent EVs. A critical subject often overlooked is the effect of fleet charging on the electrical system at the fleet facility. Although some sites will be able to handle the load from EV charging with minimal impacts, the power demands associated with charging EV fleets will likely exceed existing power capacity and management tools at many locations.

The need to prepare for significant power upgrades is ubiquitous. Guidehouse Insights estimates that there are between 400,000 and 500,000 facilities within the US that will install more than 5 million charging ports in the coming decade. There are similar scaling issues in other geographic regions facing fast EV fleet adoption, such as Europe and Asia Pacific. The need to add fleet charging infrastructure is anticipated to affect almost 10% of commercial properties. Many of these sites need to upgrade their building energy management systems (BEMSs), and many more need to install a BEMS solution to support load management associated with charging EV fleets.
