Being new to this product I was unaware it had a very small learning curve. And it's probably the reason why there are more 1-2 star reviews out there than there should be. You have to be aware that the placement of the needle is everything. You need to know how far down to insert the needle so that when you press down on the cartridge, it will expel into the narrow void between the wine and the cork. If you don't plunge it down far enough, it's very difficult to push down on the cartridge. If you go down too far, it's possible that the opening for the propellant is submerged into the wine. It's only natural to want to insert the needle all the way down before you press on the cartridge. But it's not always going to work doing that. This was occurring to me quite often. I couldn't push down on the cartridge and it felt too hard to press, or it would seem to press down with small trouble but never pop out the cork. It would expel into the wine. But once I realized that the needle needed to be in the correct position, it worked every time. So I'm changing my review. Be mindful of the propellant opening and make sure it's in the correct position before pushing down on the cartridge or you'll end up using up the gas and only open a couple of bottles with it.

I saw this used by one of the "Sharks" from Shark Tank on an Instagram post. I researched the product and found it on Amazon. I immediately ordered it due to it's simplicity and ease of opening up bottles of wine. First two or three bottles opened, I loved the sound of it just POP, just like a bottle of champagne, but it was my favorite bottle of red instead. And then......that's it. Like, that was it. Only 3 bottles were opened with the cartridge that came with the product. It was either not a full cartridge to begin with, or defective. Or maybe I was expecting a full cartridge and it was a starter to get you excited to order the refills. I'm not sure. I overall love the product, love the technology, and it's definitely a conversation piece when guests come over and see something new for the first time. But I'm bummed only 3 bottles were opened with the item. I will be buying refills, but if the claim of 50-60 bottles per cartridge don't hold up, I don't think I'll keep buying the refills. I definitely will update my review to 5-Stars if I can prove the cartridges last longer than 3 bottles.

OK, now I've used it with two older wines (a 1986 Bordeaux and a 1989 Port blend). The only criticism I can make is that the cork is released with such force that some wine jumps out of the bottle when the cork is released. I am experimenting with wrapping the device in a paper towel to catch the wine that shoots out. Even though it's a small amount, it will land on your shirt, especially if you're having guests and wearing a nice shirt. With the long Bordeaux cork, the needle extended a few millimeters into the open space and was long enough to do the job. I don't know if there are longer corks than that one, but I will update if necessary.
As for removing the cork, the device splits in half, one part turns and screws down, moving the cork along with it. The cork can then be removed very easily from the needle. Often, I don't read instructions, so this was probably mentioned and is no fault of the Cork Pops device.
Update. After several more uses, with older Bordeaux wines, I can say there is no product that solves the problem of crumbling corks better than this one. Again, the trick is to be rather forceful. Once the needle is all the way in, depress the button, ride the device up with the pressure on the cork, and remove it in one motion. I now wrap the whole thing in a paper towel, which catches the little bit of wine that jumps out of the bottle during the process. Another benefit is that you can leave the bottle upright, keeping the sediment at the bottom where it belongs.
In truth, it's not the easiest thing to use, just because it's not obvious how to use it, how much force is needed to get the needle in, how much force is needed to pull the cork out, how to free the cork after it's pulled. I mean, for me, it's super-simple, but I've seen others struggle with it. For the mechanically declined, perhaps the simpler model without the collar piece may be more intuitive; but this model looks really nice, and I think the collar piece reduces the risk of damaging the needle by not going straight down.
If you are expecting that the cork pops right out just under the pressure of the gas, forget it. Maybe one out of ten corks just comes up like that; most of the time you need to apply *some* upward force to get it started, but we're talking maybe one pound of force, vs. like ten pounds with a corkscrew.
Every once in a while, I've gotten a few drops of wine splash out of the bottle when the cork pops. It's a small thing, but it's a thing. I think maybe I was hand-holding the bottle instead of letting it rest on a counter while opening when that happened.
I'm quite happy with how much use I'm getting out of each canister of CO2. I would say conservatively I got 30 bottles opened with the first canister. Probably more.
The built-in foil cutter is passable if you can't find your dedicated foil cutter.
I've bought a couple of these as gifts, and look forward to gifting more of these as opportunity arises.
