A History of Growth

Green Groves President and Owner, Matt Nielson, is an ISA-certified arborist (#SO-10516A) and holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). He has a bachelors degree in Horticulture from Auburn University. For 12 years, he worked at what many consider to be the best tree nursery in the southern US in Athens, Georgia. During his tenure, he consulted on the design, installation, and maintenance of thousands of trees in partnership with project owners, landscape architects, and landscape contractors. Through this hands-on education, he developed his expertise in understanding why trees thrive and why they fail.

We work for you with a sole motivation to provide the best service with no incentive to sell tree services like fertilization, pruning, or removal. Our goal is to help you achieve the best results with your trees in your backyard, your city, your campus, or your development project.

Matt was great to work with. He was excellent about listening to our needs and desires for our property and tailoring his plans to meet that. His communication and follow-through was always clear and prompt. It was clear that his only goal was to give us a product that we would love, which he did in spades.

Matt at Green Groves provided more tree and plant knowledge in the first phone call than the 2 other arborists I had initially talked with. His on-site assessment strategy is very thorough, and his engagement level and line of questioning proves his expertise as well as his desire to ensure sustainability and canopy health. I look forward to a long and “healthy” relationship with Green Groves!

He also genuinely cares, listens to what the clients want and comes up with ways to make it happen. Finally, he follows up after the project is done to make sure the project is done to the client specifications and is working well.

After making a thorough diagnostic evaluation of an old oak tree, Matt explained all options we had of trying to save the tree. Matt is totally professional in every aspect of his business from communication to overseeing work being done, and follow up visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm about to build or renovate my house. Will a construction project at my home kill the nearby trees?

A: Compaction of soil from equipment and foot traffic is the biggest killer of established trees during new construction and renovations to existing structures. Ripping or cutting of roots due to excavation is a close second. Both of these will yield a long, slow death for trees. Establishing tree protection zones for those trees worth saving before the first contractor sets foot on the property is essential. An arborist can help with a tree protection plan that will save you considerable time and money in the post-construction phase.

Q: Should I fertilize my tree?

A: The short answer is “not usually”. Most soils have adequate levels of nutrients to support tree growth. The only way to determine nutrient deficiencies is with a soil test. Fertilizer that is applied without a soil test is a waste of time and money. Implementing a Fertilization program as a solution for declining trees will not target the root cause of the problem.

Q: Someone told me to cut the limbs of a tree hanging over my house. Is that a good idea?

Possibly, but an informed decision is always the best decision. A consulting arborist can offer details to help you make an informed decision to minimize the risk associated with targets (like houses, cars, people, etc), and/or the risk of damaging the tree.
