Healing Environments What's the Proof
Medezyn
Healing environments continue to be defined with new qualities including safety, security, accessibility, sustainability and now evidence-based design. Using evidence to validate the use of a particular design has become the tool of choice. Using evidence to validate the use of a particular design has become the tool of choice. Evidence shows how to mitigate barriers; evidence shows that better lighting, art programs and even water features improve patient outcomes - and reduce operating costs. This book defines the characteristics of a healing environment, listing ten essential components that make a difference in health outcomes, place, change people, comfort, senses, knowledge, empowerment, biophilia, spirit and experiences. Readers are challenged to look differently at humanity;s natural ability to heal and to integrate supporting evidence.

Healing Environments, Design for the Mind, Body & Spirit
Medezyn
What are healing environments? They are places of comfort and dignity for the body, as well as enjoyment and pleasure from our sense. They provide knowledge to erase the fears of the unknown and empower the mind to find healing. They embrace the spirit found in nature and in our God as experienced through the celebration of life.

They embrace the spirit found in nature and in our God as experienced through the celebration of life.
Suppose you have just been diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Can the environment you immerse yourself in support the healing process? Likewise can the exposure to abusive places of sickening smells, loud noises from traffic, emergency vehicles, the beeps and consonant hum of technology make us ill? Environments can harm and environments can heal. Healing environments are a body-mind, spirit link to health.
We are all healers and patients. Throughout our lives we provide compassion and love as healers. At other times we seek healing from a simple need for a hug when feeling down, a check-up at the dentist or the challenge of a major life threatening event requiring medical intervention. We are at the brink of reclaiming our natural state of health, and have a stake in the outcome. Healing environments can provide a major role in improving those outcomes.

This engagement was an opportunity to use Human-centric design for leadership innovation.
Humancentric Design: Design that surrounds and influences our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Research tells us that innovation is a communicative, human-centric process that results design by intent that combination of natural element, places of collaboration, flexibility of space, smart technology, play, attraction and reflection. These influences became cohesive into MedStar’s Mind Lab program.
