Because Life Safety Code Compliance Is Not Optional

Emergency lighting equipment must ensure proper emergency operation to illuminate the path of egress during a loss of normal power and meet life safety code requirements.

Emergency Lighting with STAR
Leave the Ladders, Disruptions and Written Records Behind.

Acuity Brands Emergency Lighting solution with Self Testing Automated Reporting (STAR), enables self-testing and automated reporting to aid in life safety code compliance. Emergency lighting equipment enabled with STAR, automatically conducts the required monthly and annual tests, log results within the units, and wirelessly communicates test data on demand to the CLAIRITY+ mobile app or STAR Gateway.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. Do all emergency lighting devices in my facility need to be enabled with STAR?

No. Only emergency lighting enabled with STAR, however, will collect the required test data. Any existing emergency lighting products not enabled with STAR would need to follow traditional testing procedures and separate written logs would have to be maintained for those devices.
  • 2. Can non-authorized users control my emergency lighting enabled with STAR?

Emergency lighting products enabled with STAR do not accept outside read/write commands, and it is not possible for devices to wirelessly invoke any unscheduled tests, manipulate test data, or alter device ID. Your password-protected profile for products enabled with STAR contains the organizational data-collection structure (sites, groups, device names) and cannot be viewed or accessed in any way via device hardware that is enabled with STAR.
  • 3. Why does my emergency lighting enabled with STAR have a test switch on it even though it is a self-testing device?

Life Safety Code requires that all emergency lighting devices feature a physical means to test the device to ensure system readiness. The test switch on the emergency device is fully functional and can be used to conduct a momentary test outside of the programmed test schedule, if desired. The emergency device will include the results of this manual test with its routine testing results for reporting of emergency lighting enabled with STAR.
  • 4. The test switch/indicator light on my emergency device is flashing. What does that mean?

The indicator light communicates status of the emergency device and can indicate a few different things, ranging from normal operation or a recent test failure. Always refer to the owner’s manual or installation instructions of the specific device for a complete list of the different indication signals (manuals can be accessed online via www.acuitybrands.com). If the signal is the result of a test failure, it can also be viewed within the CLAIRITY+ mobile app where you can access emergency lighting enabled with STAR.
  • 5. What is the difference between Mobile STAR and Connected STAR?

Choose your preferred deployment with Mobile STAR, where test data is logged in each individual unit and collected by walking around with the mobile app, or Connected STAR, where test data is logged in the STAR Gateway by IOTA and automatically emailed on a monthly basis.
  • 6. Is there a limit to the number of Sites, Groups, or Devices I can have in my profile?

Currently, a user can create up to 10 sites per user per day, but there is no other limitation for the number of allowed Sites, Groups, or Devices you may add to your account.
  • 7. Is there a push notification that it is time to receive test results?

When you open the CLAIRITY+ app, it will show which sites are compliant, which sites are coming and up and which sites are overdue.
  • 8. What Acuity products are available with the emergency lighting enabled with STAR and how do I order them?

Acuity Brands Life Safety products enabled with STAR will use the AELR (automated emergency lighting reporting) option and the emergency drivers enabled with STAR that are factory installed into the Acuity Brands luminaires will use the E10WSTAR or E10WRSTAR option.
  • 9. Is there a subscription fee for this offering?

No. Mobile STAR and Connected STAR do not require subscription fees. There is an adder for the radio and self-diagnostic electronics included in the products ordered with the AELR designation.
  • 10. Does the app work with IOS and Android?

The Clairity+ app is free and available to download for IOS or Android compatibility.
  • 11. What communication distance should I expect from the radio in the product to the CLAIRITY+ Mobile app?

In open spaces, communication distances will be in the 30’ to 50’ range. Walls and obstructions could limit the distance of this communication.
  • 12. How does the CLAIRITY+ Mobile app collect data from the products with the AELR radio included?

Facility management personnel will need to have the CLAIRITY+ mobile app open and in the forefront of the mobile device and walk within reporting distance. Once within distance the radio will report the latest test data to the app.
  • 13. What reports does emergency lighting enabled with STAR deliver and how do I create them?

Once the monthly data is collected, from your site screen inside the app, you will see an active link to “Export Compliance Report”. When this is selected, the app will create a pdf report and your mobile device's standard apps will appear for selection of which one they want to use to send report for printing or electronic filing.
  • 14. What is self-testing?

Emergency lighting equipment with self-testing/self-diagnostic automatically conducts the code-required 30-second monthly and 90-minute annual tests. If an issue is encountered, the emergency equipment will communicate the problem via flashing of the illuminated charge indicator / test switch. This feature eliminates the need for facility owners to physically initiate the required monthly and annual tests.
  • 15. Can I field install the IOTA ILB with the AELR option?

Yes. Like any emergency battery pack, you must first determine the required output voltage. If the LED module in the fixture is Class 2 (10 – 60VDC), the ILB CP10 HE ALER driver should be used. If a higher, non-Class 2 voltage is required (50 – 200VDC), the ILB CP20 HE AELR HV should be used. Most indoor fixtures are low voltage, whereas many industrial fixtures are high voltage. Compatibility rests on determining the fixture configuration.
  • 16. What are the required fixture spacings for Connected STAR applications?

Fixture spacings are typical for commercial spaces, and in most cases a single STAR Gateway will be able to network through a multi-story building.

For industrial installations using the ILB CP20 HE ALER HV and fixtures spacings up to 25 ‘ on center, designs that meet path of egress lighting throughout the entire facility will, in most cases, allow a STAR Gateway to communicate to all fixtures.

See the eLearning for STAR for more information or submit an RFA request for an Acuity Brands design review.

NOTE: For industrial installations using Indura, with limited paths of egress and wide spacings then Connected STAR will likely NOT network through the facility, making Mobile STAR the best alternative.

  • 17. Does Connected STAR offer an interactive facility map showing non-compliant devices?

Connected STAR utilizes labeling input during the Clairity + Commissioning process and references the As Built documentation to locate non-compliant devices.
  • 18. When do I use Mobile STAR vs Connected?

Mobile STAR is best suited for small scale applications and Connected STAR is best suited for large scale applications.
