Jasper National Park is the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve in the world. Protecting our night sky from light pollution is extremely important to us which is why we have taken the following actions to reduce our energy consumption: We have converted all light fixtures on property to energy efficient bulbs. We have committed to replacing all of our street lights to dark sky certified fixtures, having already converted the area around the Main Lodge. Dining outlets host candle-lit dining experiences every Earth Hour and Earth Day, and we encourage all our guests to remain energy-conscious at home and in the workplace throughout the year through the Power Down Campaign. Leftover soap, hygiene products, linens and lost and found items that would otherwise be discarded from guest rooms are donated to Soap for Hope, which processes and distributes amenities to community facilities serving vulnerable individuals throughout Canada and impoverished nations around the globe. The Lodge is proudly active as a caring community partner.
In addition to sourcing an increasing amount of local Albertan food and only serving OceanWise Certified fish to prevent overfishing of at-risk species, Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has increased its growing capacity in the resort’s greenhouse to help reduce food sourcing costs and carbon emissions related to transportation. In operation since 1929, the greenhouse continues to grow many plants used to beautify Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s property, and in 2020 it was upgraded to allow the capacity to grow microgreens and root vegetables that are utilized by their culinary team in the resort’s restaurants.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has earned a Five-Green Key Eco-Rating Certification from Green Key Global for seven consecutive years. This program recognizes hotels and lodging facilities for their commitment to improving environmental and fiscal performance when it comes to sustainable commitments. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge has been featured on Green Key Global as an example of a large business effectively integrating sustainability into its operations.
Recently, Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge renovated 300 guest bathrooms across the property. All of the renovated bathrooms were retrofitted with certified low-flow sink faucets, toilets, and showerheads. The installation of low-flow fixtures helps the resort to dramatically reduce water consumption.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and its ownership group have identified and invested significant capital resources to remove major fire hazards around the entire property. Staff communities have also banded together to conduct annual property and shoreline clean-ups to keep the property safe for wildlife and guests. The resort actively participates in the FireSmart Safe Neighbourhood Program to further its commitment of keeping its communities safe from wildfires.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is proud to have numerous electric vehicle charging stations on property. Additionally, the resort’s 50+ vehicle fleet is piloting new electric and hybrid vehicles in an effort to convert all vehicles to electric.
Accor’s Net-Zero Carbon Calculator helps Meeting & Event clients to calculate their carbon footprint and offset emissions by purchasing carbon credits to balance the remaining emissions. The solution is provided in collaboration with myclimate.org, a Swiss non-profit organization and global leader in carbon accounting and climate protection.
The resort has made significant strides to reduce plastic consumption, having eliminated all 100% of plastic straws, plastic cups and plastic water bottles from guest-facing operations. Accor’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Brune Poirson, committed that all Accor properties worldwide will eliminate all guest-facing single-use plastic by the end of 2022. With Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s on-site water treatment plant filtering glacier water directly from Lac Beauvert, guests and staff are encouraged to enjoy some of the cleanest water in the world straight from the tap.
We are thankful to have some of the cleanest drinking water in the entire world right here in Jasper National Park.
Our water begins its journey in the glacier above Maligne Lake. The water is naturally filtered through a series of underground canals called the Karsdt system and eventually enters into Lac Beauvert. From there, our onsite water treatment plant draws the water directly from the lake and filters it to the highest standards before pumping it across the property for guests and staff to enjoy!
