Tiny home that was 3D printed in just days costs fraction of new house, people love the open floor plan and ‘raw’ design

A GROUP of college students have created a 3D-printed tiny home that only took days to build for a fraction of the price.

The home is kept on a small area of land on the Woodbury University campus in Burbank, California.

Designed by architecture students, the 425-square-foot home is the first 3D-printed building to be permitted and built in Los Angeles.

From its concept to its current form, the project took about 15 months.

The house can be altered to fit various lifestyle needs, which makes it an exciting prototype for the future.

"It's a proof of concept that this really can be done and then can be repeated and scaled in a way that has a huge effect on our community but on the world at large even," Dr. Barry Ryan, president of Woodbury University told ABC 7.

The home was entered into the solar decathlon, a competition for college students that encourages designers to create a high-performance structure with renewable energy.

One of the students explained how the team decided to present their 3-D housing project.

"I think it looks really nice. I'm glad that we kept it raw concrete…we didn't add any paints or anything like this on top of it so we can see all of the different layers and the actual material," said Jade Royer, who recently graduated from Woodbury.

Much of the home was built with sustainable materials, according to fellow recent graduate, Jessica Gomez.

"The dining chairs and the table is made from recyclable paper, so we try to think sustainably from the building but also with how we wanted to furnish it," she said.

The water used in the shower is also recirculated for toilet flushing and the unique shape of the home is purposely designed to maximize solar power.

Concrete was used to reduce noise and preserve temperatures inside while also being an environmentally friendly resource.

It only took three days to print the entire home in a process that was so precise, no concrete was wasted.

"It's a prototype, it's many things all rolled into one and that was really what we were offering Los Angeles and the community to sort of learn and incorporate in their projects, in their homes, just offering it as an example," said Kishani De Silva, the construction management chair at the university.

The project was a collaboration between two dozen students and over 30 organizations.

One of the lucky students may just get to break in the one-of-the-kind tiny home.

In addition to the sustainability factor, the tiny home is also incredibly affordable.

"It's funny, you think that advanced technology is more expensive, but the fact is, we were able to get this project built for just over $250,000, and that's incredibly affordable for housing in Los Angeles," said Heather Flood, the dean of Woodbury's School of Architecture.

The program is now available at all nine LACCD campuses.
